Volunteer
We are looking for lots of people, with many skills and gifts, to help prepare resources and develop plans for the 2017 season.
Here are some of the program areas that we have identified where pastors, church members, and activists can help Not Ordinary Times take shape. Please use the form at the bottom of this page to let us know how you would like to be involved.
Core Questions
Join us as part of a short-term work group that will expand and refine the list of core questions that are central to the Not Ordinary Times project, and sketch out some of the primary answers that are relevant in terms of Not Ordinary Times.
Worship Themes
Help us develop the core questions into a series of weekly worship themes, and tie them to scripture texts and other readings. Where possible (??), link the week's theme to a text in the current years RCL. Provide suggestions about a progression through themes, and suggested dates -- while also allowing pastors to define a different ordering.
Liturgy
Find and create powerful worship elements to support worship themes -- prayers, call to worship, responsive readings/litanies. Develop liturgical practices and worship services that go deeply into a theme or pastoral need (awe, lament, commitment).
Resources & References
Develop an extensive and annotated bibliography of basic and advanced materials for pastors to use in developing an overall approach, and to work on specific themes.
Praxis
Suggest current issues and action items that relate to the core questions and the worship themes. Help us present these issues both as examples with informative and compelling stores that are very specific, and as places where churches can encourage particular forms of action (personal behavior, political action, public witness, community organizing, etc.)
NOTE: Not Ordinary Times is not being presented as "the action alert of the week", but the overall season must connect with current issues and motivate people to committed action.
Marketing & Publicity
Gather endorsements of the project from significant public figures (theologians, preachers, activists, church leaders). Develop and implement strategies to spread the word about Not Ordinary Times and to get pastors/congregations to make commitments.
Communication
Develop and maintain ways for participants to join in conversation about themes, and for participants to be kept richly informed about developments (without being overwhelming). Assist with moderating blogs and forums on the Not Ordinary Times website.
Arts & Graphics
Find or create graphics for the Not Ordinary Times website. Find or create graphics that support weekly worship themes. Point to arts (music, poetry, visual arts) that support weekly themes.
Editing
Provide editing of website statements, resources, and other materials. Help develop a consistent "voice" and style. Help establish a balance between brevity and detail.
